At a time characterised by a constant rise of ethnic, gender and religious-based hate speech and incidents across Europe this project aims at fostering a common reflection on how discriminatory legislation affected the lives of European citizens in the late modern period. The project will investigate the effects that ethnic, religious and gender discriminations implemented by authoritarian and totalitarian regimes in Europe and in European-ruled Overseas Territories had on family ties (e.g. interfaith marriages and children born from those unions, transfer of populations, divided families) as well as on personal relationships (severance of friendships and working relations). The recollection of personal stories will be used as a tool to rise among young generations the awareness of the damaging effects that ethnic, religious, and gender-based discrimination can cause at any time to the life of individuals, as well as the importance that the convictions and prejudices on which such discriminations were based will not surge back. A reflection on the most painful pages of European history is today most necessary to reaffirm social cohesion and solidarity, as well as the choice in favour of the values ​​of freedom, inclusion, equality and participation on which the European Union was founded. In order to achieve the project’s goal the following activities will be carried out: seminars and workshops targeting high school and university students, with a special focus on future teachers; collection of testimonies; a travelling video and photo-documentary exhibition; an international conference. The project involves a transnational partnership consisting of universities and research institutes as well as private and public bodies from 4 EU Member States (Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, and Romania).
